Pandora Radio is a great invention. If you don't know about it, it's an online radio where you can choose a band or a single song and it will find other songs with similar qualities and create a radio station for you.
I like to listen to Pandora when I write. Most of the time, I listen to music that is not my normal chill, drive in the car, jam out kind of music.
The main reason I listen to music when I write is to block out distractions. It helps me stay focused because I can't hear all the things going on outside of my computer.
The reason I listen to music that is not my normal style is because it's a lot easier for me to not get distracted or hung up on the music playing. It's there to block out other noises, but my brain, for the most part, blocks out the music anyway.
It's also a great way for me to set the tone of my book and to get to know my characters a little better. Every once in a while when I feel stuck or something then I actually listen to some of the music playing and it reminds me what the voice of my character sounds like or what they would listen to after a hard day or what they would do to jam out.
For this novel, I'm listening to a combination of radios including: Linkin Park, The Offspring, Collective Soul, Three Days Grace, and the Decemberists. These bands are not exactly my usual music style of choice, but they're perfect for my novel. They've got a lot of the teen boy flavors involved in my book. These radios are probably what my characters would listen to.
Here's an example of one of the songs that comes up on my "Dare Devil" Pandora radio
